England lose Strauss early after dismissing Pakistan for 257

ABU DHABI: Pakistan dismissed struggling England captain Andrew Strauss early to keep up their hopes of restricting their opponents on the second day of the second Test in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Strauss, who has scored only one hundred in the last 30 months, was caught at short leg off spinner Mohammad Hafeez to leave England at 27-1 before Alastair Cook (27) and Jonathan Trott (five) took the score to 48-1 at the lunch break.

In the morning Stuart Broad took four for 47 to bowl Pakistan out for 257 as they added just one run to their overnight score of 256-7.

Pakistan will now look to restrict England on the Sheikh Zayad Stadium pitch that has been uncharacteristically helpful to the bowlers on the first two days.

Cook and Strauss were opening the England innings together for the 100th time, but the captain's early fall for 11 meant they were unable to mark the milestone with a big stand.

Pakistan introduced Hafeez in the seventh over and were rewarded with the wicket of Strauss, who edged a sharp turner which flew off his pad to Asad Shafiq at short leg.

Earlier, Broad and James Anderson (2-46) took 16 deliveries to wrap up Pakistan's innings, the last three wickets falling off just seven balls.

Pakistan had rested their hopes on Misbah-ul Haq but the captain added just one to his overnight score of 83 before being trapped leg-before by Broad.

Misbah, who hit five boundaries and four sixes during his 173-ball knock, asked for a review of the decision but to no avail as the replay showed the ball going on to hit the middle and leg-stumps.

From the other end Anderson, wicket-less on Wednesday, trapped Saeed Ajmal and then had the last man Junaid Khan caught by Graeme Swann to finish off the innings.
