To commemorate April Fool’s Day, Victoria Police pulled a prank saying it is now recruiting camels for its team.

In their Facebook post, they said they were bringing in a new caravan of camels.

"Victoria Police will soon take ownership of its new caravan of Camels as part of an expansion to mounted operations," the post read.

The statement turned out to be an excellent prank because of how serious it sounded.

Victoria Police listed benefits of having camels on board such as the consequent fuel efficiency and "cutting down on water cannon expenditure".

According to the post, East-West Specialist Operations Inspector Bactrian Camelus said that adding camels would help police in overcoming some of the ‘humps’ in everyday policing.

“The new unit will be staffed entirely by wild rescue camels,” he said.

Unfortunately, the idea turned out to be nothing but a very believable joke.

A sarcastic comment under the post by the Police itself read “the bad news is the enthusiasm for camel squad has run dry and no Victoria Police camels will be coming to the streets near you. The good news is we are recruiting new humans to the ranks – and that is no joking matter.”

Facebook users, however, still appreciated the idea and wished it were actually true.

One person said, "Nice, wish this were true for the camels' sake."

Others added to the sarcasm. One user wrote, "Very innovative VicPol. I believe the usefulness of being able to completely shut nostrils is quite obvious."
