A 30-year-old man was taken into custody for wandering around with a little girl's severed head who he had allegedly murdered, Zee News reported.
While the motive behind the incident is still unclear, the villagers in Odisha's Sambalpur district are shocked to the core.
The eight-year-old had reportedly gone to the fields to relieve herself. There, the man attacked her with an axe.
In a gruesome turn of events, he then wandered around the village with her severed head and even washed it in a tube well.
When the suspect's wife confronted him, she too was threatened with the same axe. After this, the accused went to sleep.
Police immediately arrested the man, while investigations revealed that he had no animosity against the deceased's family and was an alcoholic.
"We're yet to ascertain what was going on in his mind when he committed the crime," the police said.
The girl's body was sent for an autopsy.
