KARACHI: Lyari area of the metropolis remained highly tense as the shootout between police and armed miscreants continued on Monday, Geo News reported.

According to sources, criminals fired rockets at the security forces in the vicinity of Kalri Police Station near Ibrahim Masjid that injured two children.

Sporadic firing continued in different areas of Lyari while the residents are still moving to safer places as electricity and water supply have discontinued for the past four days

The operation launched in Lyari on Friday against criminal elements by the Anti-Extremism Cell, entered its fourth day on Monday. So far, five more persons have lost their lives.

Those killed included a policeman. Besides, over 20 people, including two deputy superintendents of police and a woman, were injured, while two Armoured Personnel Carriers, including a chain APC, were damaged during the gun battles.

Police claimed to have killed five accomplices of the outlaws and also recovered a huge cache of arms. They added that during Sunday night’s battle one Taj Mohammed alias Taju, wanted by the police in a number of cases related to murder, kidnapping for ransom and extortion, was injured.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), South Range, Shaukat Ali Shah confirmed the death of a policeman and the injuring of several others including the DSPs Mohammed Nawaz and Haji Abdul Razzaque.

The DIG said that during Sunday’s battle, the police managed to clear several parts of Lyari, which also include Afshani Gali and Cheel Chowk.

Regarding the killing of gangsters, he said that during the gun fights some gangsters were killed but this was not yet confirmed as there were reports that the gangsters had taken the bodies of their dead colleagues as well as those who were injured with them.
