CHICAGO:A gunman opened fire at a military recruiting center in Tennessee on Thursday, striking at least one officer, the local mayor said.

Multiple victims were being treated in a hospital, WRCB news reported.
"We have an officer down," Chattanooga mayor Andy Berke told reporters, but did not say if the victim was dead.

"The suspect is also down." The US Navy tweeted that it was investigating a report of a shooting at a naval recruiting building in Chattanooga.

It said the shooting did not impact the nearby naval reserve base. The base was placed on lockdown following the shooting, as was a local college and area businesses.

Berke offered "prayers to all those affected" in the "horrific incident," in a tweet shortly after the shooting.

Local media initially reported that gunshots were also heard on the naval base and another location. However, it appears as though the shooting was limited to the recruiting center.

The shooting happened at about 10:00 am.
