Storm victims can vote anywhere: NY governor

NEW YORK: New Yorkers who have been driven from their homes by superstorm Sandy can vote at any polling station in the state not just
their local center, governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

"I am signing an executive order today that will allow affidavit voting," Cuomo told a press conference. "You can go to any polling place if you are displaced, sign an affidavit, and you can vote in that polling place."

The move affects those living in New York City, in Nassau and Suffolk counties on hard-hit Long Island, and residents of Westchester and Rockland counties north and west of the city.

New York state authorities are trying to ensure that those affected by the storm are not disenfranchised on Tuesday, when US voters go to the polls to choose a new president -- incumbent Barack Obama or Republican rival Mitt Romney. (AFP)
