Muharram security heightened across Pakistan

KARACHI: Security has been heightened for Muharram-ul Haram across Pakistan in light of terror threats during 8-10 Muharram and attacks outside Imambargahs in Karachi and Rawalpindi.

Sindh

The Sindh government has announced a public holiday from 8-10 Muharram and all educational institutions and government offices will remain closed.

The army has also accepted the provincial government’s request of providing security in the province if the need arises.

Roads leading to MA Jinnah road have already been blocked by containers.

Meanwhile the roads leading to the Abdullah Shah Gazi shrine have also been sealed due to security risks.

Punjab

A spokesperson from the Punjab government has announced that pillion riding will be banned in the province on 9-10 Muharram. Earlier senior provincial minister Zulfiqar Khosa had said that pillion riding would be banned from 8 Muharram.

IG Punjab said that 120,000 security officials would be deployed during processions along with aerial surveillance.

The private school association has announced that schools in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be closed on Friday.

CCTV cameras will also monitor all entry and exit points of the provincial capital Lahore.


Balochistan

FC personnel have been deployed in Quetta and helicopters will be used to provide aerial surveillance during processions.

Police will be deployed along the route of Muharram processions across the province.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

All government schools have been closed in Peshawar from 8-10 Muharram. The Peshawar University will also remain closed during these days.

Police will be deployed across the routes of Muharram processions across the province.
