Rats in the New Orleans police department have been eating the marijuana placed inside the evidence room that was stored after the confiscation by the authorities, according to the top police official of the city.

The offices are so filthy that animals find their way into the evidence room, Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said adding that those "rats are all high".

"The uncleanliness [in the building] is off the charts," she told the city council, according to a Sky News report.

Rats have been found dropping on the desks of the officers according to Kirkpatrick, highlighting the dire condition that the building "has been taken over by mould and cockroaches."

A global technical director for Orkin Pest Control Ron Harrison heard for the first time that rats have been eating marijuana.

However, if they do eat, they would feel the same effect as humans, he was quoted as saying.

The condition of marijuana also causes differences in effects. Some feel relaxed with their senses altered, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

"From understanding the biology of the rat and how it's somewhat similar to us, I would think based on the amount or concentration they take in, it would be somewhat similar to what humans experience," Harrison stated.
