Charithra Chandran, who played Edwina Sharma, younger sister of Kate Sharma in Bridgerton, has spoken out against the ‘oppressive’ Hollywood mentality.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, the 27-year-old said she felt that the entertainment industry pits people of color against each other.

Suggesting that it’s not a ‘zero-sum game’ where one group needs to advance at the expense of another, the actress said, “You’re so focused on fighting your own that you become distracted from the people doing the oppressing”.

“The oppressors have imposed the idea that there’s only one seat at the table when what other people of color are doing is just pulling up more chairs”, she added.

The How to Date Billy Walsh alum also expressed that the concern comes from the sense of responsibility she feels, following the growing fan base.

Pointing out that she never pictured herself as a ‘role model’, she continued, “A lot of young girls follow me on social media, so I do feel a sense of responsibility.”

She further contributed, “I think that is the burden of representation, right?”.

“The goal is that representation is so nuanced and so consistent that no one individual portrayal has that burden, but while I have it, it’s a really important responsibility that I take seriously.”
