A consortium of Japanese telecommunications companies has developed a high-speed 6G wireless device capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 20 times faster than 5G, which means you can download ultra-high definition movies in seconds, Interesting Engineering reported Saturday.

The gadget is capable of achieving data transmission rates of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) and operates effectively within a range of up to 330 feet (100 meters).

The collaboration involves four firms: DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Fujitsu, which came together for this project. Since 2021, these companies have been jointly researching and developing sub-terahertz devices, anticipating the arrival of the 6G technology era.

According to a statement, tests successfully reached “ultra-high-speed 100 Gbps transmissions in the 100 GHz and 300 GHz bands at distances of up to 100 meters".

The project is currently faced with several significant hurdles the developers must overcome. These include puzzling out what precise performance standards wireless devices operating in the sub-terahertz band must be able to fulfil, before actually developing those gadgets.

Experts suggest that the potential for seamless high-speed connectivity in future technologies is unlimited, enabling capabilities like ultra-HD video streaming, real-time control in autonomous vehicles, and much much more.
