ISLAMABAD: The government will continue to facilitate for the early completion of all formalities and hand over the mortal remains of the prisoner Sarabjit Singh to the Indian High Commission at the earliest possible, Foreign Office (FO) said on Thursday.
According to the FO spokesman, Pakistan had been providing all assistance to the family of Sarabjit Singh and to the Indian authorities since the occurrence of this unfortunate incident.
He said the prisoner‚ who had been in a comatose state and on a ventilator for the last few days‚ was being provided the best treatment available and the medical staff at Jinnah Hospital had been working round the clock since his hospitalization to save his life.
Despite their best efforts‚ they could not save him and Sarabjit Singh passed away due to cardiac arrest, the spokesman added.
Sarabjit Singh succumbed to injuries in Jinnah Hospital Lahore on Wednesday night.He was attacked by two other inmates at the Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore on Friday. He had received serious head injuries.
Singh was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, amid tight security after providing him initial treatment at the prison hospital.
The inmates — identified as Rizwan and Amir who attacked Sarabjit — were on the death row. Later, the Kot Lakhpat Police registered a case against two prisoners under the offence of attempt to murder Sarabjit.
