KARACHI: National Student Federation (NSF) Tuesday demanded of the government to lift ban on Students Union, which it believes would pave way for democracy in the educational institutes.
The demand came as the NSF marked February 11 as a ‘black day’ and staged nationwide protest demonstrations against the ban imposed on Students Union on the same date in 1984 by the then military ruler General Zia ul Haq.
Students from various colleges, varsities and local areas of the city holding placards and banners participated in the demonstration that held outside the Karachi Press Club.
Speaking on the occasion, NSF Organizer Khuram Ali Nayyer said students have systemically been drawn away from student politics by slogans like ‘Talaba ko siyasat se bachao’ (protect students from politics).
“It is ironic how on one side educational institutions say that students come to colleges and universities to study and not for politics but at the same time they have not only failed to provide proper education, but the students demanding their due rights have also been silenced,” he said.
The similar protest demonstrations were held in Faisalabad, Jhang, Chiniot and various other cities with the resolution that they would not end their struggle till their demands are met. -PR
