SIMFEROPOL: Polls opened in Crimea on Sunday for a unique referendum to break away from Ukraine and join Russia, with the first voters seen entering polling stations in the regional capital Simferopol.

AFP reporters also saw some 20 people coming out to vote in Bakhchysaray, the centre of Crimea´s Muslim Tatar community which has called for a boycott of the controversial secession vote.
