CHITTAGONG: Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by five runs in a sensational match in their Group-1 match of the Super Ten Series in the fifth World Twenty20 here at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing 166 South Africa were well on the way towards a win but failed to achieve the target as they could reach 160-8 in the 20 overs.
Jean-Paul Duminy top scored with 39 from 30 balls with three fours and two sixes, followed by Quinton de Kock (25), captain AB de Villiers (24) and Hashim Amla (23).
For Sri Lanka, off-break bowler Sachithra Senanayake took two wickets for 22 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss and made 165 runs for the loss of seven wickets.
Opener Kusal Perera made 61 off 40 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes. He was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match after the match ended.
Angelo Mathews also contributed a useful 43 from 32 balls with three boundaries and a six.
Leg-break bowler Imran Tahir was the most successful bowler for South Africa grabbing three wickets for 26 runs while fast bowlers Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn claimed two wickets each.
