Montgomerie wins over-50 championship

BENTON HARBOR: Scotland´s Colin Montgomerie finally has a major golf title and a victory in the United States, even though it took until the over-50 Champions Tour to achieve the goals.

Montgomerie fired a six-under par 65 on Sunday to capture the Senior PGA Championship by four strokes over 64-year-old Tom Watson at Harbor Shores.

The 51-year-old Scotsman finished on 13-under-par 271 for his first victory on the senior tour, his first title of any sort since the 2007 European Open and his first official US triumph.

Montgomerie had failed to win a major title in 71 attempts on the regular US PGA and European tours.

He needed five senior major starts before claiming the long-sought breakthrough victory.

In addition to the $378,000 top prize, Montgomerie gave himself one more chance to claim a regular major title with an exemption into this year´s PGA Championship at Valhalla. (AFP)
