ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday suspended memberships of 209 lawmakers from the Senate, National and provincial assemblies.
The ECP has also issued a notification to the above effect.
40 members of the National Assembly, two senators, 98 Punjab Assembly parliamentarians and nine members of the Balochistan Assembly have been suspended. The membership of 27 Sindh Assembly parliamentarians and 32 from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was also suspended over failure to submit asset details.
Prominent lawmakers whose membership has been suspended include JI Amir Siraj-ul-Haq, PTI’s Arif Alvi, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Owais Muzaffar, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional’s Peer Saddaruddin Shah Rashidi, Pakistan Muslim League-N’s Daniyal Aziz and Chaudhry Jaffar.
Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Senator Jamal Leghari, Senator Qayyum Soomro, Senator Mohammad Yousuf and others were also suspended from their respective assemblies.
Under sub-section (1) of the section 42-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1976, each member of the legislatures has to file statement of their assets and liabilities to the Election Commission that are then notified in the official gazette by October 15 every year.
