Cyclone Nilofar 1,222 KM away from Karachi

KARACHI: The deep depression formed over the central western parts of Arabian Sea has converted into a tropical cyclone and named Nilofar which may further intensify into a severe tropical cyclone during the next 36-48 hours.

According to the Meteorological Department, Tropical Cyclone Nilofar is 1,222 KM away from Karachi and 1,145 KM away from Gwadar.

Tropical Storm Nilofar is present 906 KM away in south east of Arabia Sea near Salah city of Oman and heavy rainfall is expected in the coastal areas of Oman in the next 24-36 hours.

Rain in expected in the lower areas of Sindh including Karachi and coastal areas of Balochistan during Wednesday to Friday.

The Metrological Department has warned fishermen in these areas not to travel into the open sea during these days.

Chief Meteorologist, Touseef Alam said on Monday that heavy rain was expected in the coastal areas of Pakistan due to Tropical Cyclone Nilofar. Speaking to Geo News, Alam said the tropical cyclone was moving towards Oman and will weaken when it moves towards Pakistan.


Mr Alam further said that the coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan can be affected by the cyclone. Rain is expected in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Nawabshah, KT Bandar and Jamshoro. According to the chief meteorologist the cyclone would also impact Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Gujrat in India.

He also warned fishermen not to travel into the open sea during October 28-31. Mr Alam added that the weather during the next two days would remain dry in Karachi while rain was expected after the cyclone hit the coastal areas turning the weather pleasant.
