Karachi: New security steps irk citizens

KARACHI: Karachi police have taken new steps to overcome the existing violence that has irked the citizens, Geo News reported Thursday.

The sources told that police, in its latest strategy to control the violence wave in the metropolis, have banned pillion riding and conducted search operations in different areas.

Police have also released orders to close down late-night tea stalls by midnight.

Rangers and CID police conducted targeted raids in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Abul Hasan Isfahani Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal bloack 4, Korangi and Shah Faisal Colony.

At least a dozen persons belonging to different political parties were held by the security forces who were shifted to undisclosed location for investigation.

The security forces conducted raids following up a tip-off regarding suspicious activities in the areas.

On Wednesday night, 11 people including two ANP activists were killed in the city in a new wave of targeted violence that has claimed 14 lives so far. The violence began late on Tuesday night and sporadic killings continued to take place throughout the day. Many of the casualties occurred following attacks on tea stalls.

The deputy inspector general (DIG) had declared red alert in Karachi's East Zone and ordered all sub-divisional police officers and SHOs to provide security to tea-stalls in the area.
