KARACHI: In what is seen as a normal phenomenon just before the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan, the prices of food items have soared in almost all the local markets of the metropolis.

Prices of most of vegetables including potato, onion, ginger, ladyfinger, cauliflower, black pepper, lemon and cabbage registered an increase. Similarly, the prices of banana, mango and other fruit also increased.

Citizens have complained that it is a yearly routine that before the start of Ramazan, shopkeepers increase the prices of fruit and vegetables which is unwarranted and against the spirit of Islam.

They have also complained that there is neither price lists in the market nor the government officials to control this menace.

They said that this price hike ahead of the Holy month have added the miseries of poverty hit masses who are also bearing massive loadshedding.
