KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ibad Khan has announced a special grant of Rs 50 million for the initial and basic work of newly created Sindh Medical University (SMU).
He made this announcement while presiding over a high level meeting at Governor House which reviewed the matters relating to the university. He said every possible support will be extended to the university to make it a medical institution of international standard.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Secretary Law, Secretary Health, VC Dow Medical University and VC Sindh Medical University Dr Tariq Rafi and other officials attended the meeting.
The meeting took principle decision to rename the university as Jinnah Sindh Medical University and make Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) as its constituent hospital while NICH and NICVD as its affiliated institutions.
Sindh Governor said that this university should be made as an identity of Karachi city and funds will be provided to SMU without making any deduction in the funds of Dow Medical University.
He issued instructions for the appointment of transition officer for finalizing matters between these two universities and said that necessary legislation will be done in this regard.
He said that Dr Ishrat ul Ibad Khan Institute of Oral Health will work under Dow University and be shifted to a new venue.
