KARACHI: At least 244 police recruits, who suffered food poisoning, were rushed to Jinnah Hospital here, Geo News reported.

According to Deputy Director Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Simi Jamal, above 100 trainee cops have been discharged after a marked improvement in thier condition.

“We are sending the patients back to the training center as they are getting better but not without a final medical examination”, she said.

"Some of the rest are being monitored in Ward No.5 and the others are kept in different wards for the same", she informed Geo News

Earlier a mass food-poisoning incident at Razzakabad Police Training Centre made headlines where hundreds of trainees, who had eaten the food provided by the in-house mess, developed acute symptoms of severe gastric stress.

Contaminated food consumed by the trainee cops in breakfast, lunch and dinner is said to be the seemingly cause of this mass hospitalizations.
Most of the cops first started throwing up, which worsened to the extent they were not able to carry themselves owing to severe dehydration.

Most of them passed out following bouts of excessive vomiting.

On the other hand 35 police recruits were rushed to a hospital near Pakistan Steel Mills.

Sources in the police academy told Geo News that the last meal served at the mess was a dish of chickpeas and boiled eggs.

Enraged fellow trainee cops holding the cooks responsible for the incident stormed the dining-room/kitchen and gave their anger full vent by vandalizing the furniture, utensils, etc.

When contacted, Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh, Fayyaz Leghari, denied any deaths caused by the food-poisoning.

“Around 10-15 cops are suffering from gastritis after having stale food”, said he.

He added that the kitchen has been sealed and a team of senior doctors and police authorities has been to Steel Town Hospital to look into the matter.

Food poisoning occurs when you swallow food or water that contains bacteria, parasites, viruses, or toxins made by these germs. Most cases of food poisoning are from common bacteria such as Staphylococcus or E. coli.
