KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a review petition filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan against delimitation of constituencies in Karachi.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali remarked during the hearing of Karachi law and order case at the Karachi Registry of the Court, that delimitation of constituencies had nothing to do with census. He observed that census was required to increase or decrease the number of National Assembly or provincial assemblies’ seats.

During the hearing, counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan said election might be postponed due to delimitation of constituencies.

“We won’t allow you even in your dreams to utter a word about any delay in election,” Justice Khilji Arif Hussain told the lawyer.

The court said it had clearly ordered for delimitation of constitutes. Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali told the ECP lawyer that it was incumbent upon the electoral body to comply with the SC orders. However, the court said it was another issue whether the task was possible or not.

The court also dismissed a summary produced by Secretary Transport regarding an amendment in Motor Vehicle Law and directed him to produce a new one within three days.

Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani asked him to increase fine by Rs5000 so that offenders could keep in their mind lose of money in case of violation of law.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said people had been left at the mercy of different mafias. The hearing was adjourned till Thursday.
