LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday allowed Deputy Governor of State bank of Pakistan (SBP) Ashraf Wathra to continue discharging his duties, Geo News reported.

The Lahore High Court was hearing the case pertaining to reports about Ashraf Wathra’s political appointment.

During the proceedings, the lawyer representing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told the court that Wathra’s appointment is an administrative matter, and the commission has no objection over it.

After hearing this, the court allowed Ashraf Wathra to continue his duties as deputy governor.

Earlier, the ECP had taken notice of reports about the political hiring of Deputy Governor of the SBP and directed the Finance Secretary through a letter to remove the official within two days.

The ECP had sought response over the appointment of the deputy governor despite a ban impose by the electoral body.

However Asad Amin, a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, said that they had not received any letter from the ECP.
