ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has, in principle, decided to hold the presidential election on August 6 and has also prepared its recommendations, Geo News reported Monday.

According to sources, the ECP termed the reasons submitted by the government to postpone the election as insufficient and decided to hold the election on August 6.

The ECP will soon notify the government about the decision.

Earlier, the government of Pakistan through the Ministry of Law had requested the ECP to reconsider and reissue the schedule for the presidential election as several parliamentarians will be out of the country for pilgrimage or will be observing Etikaaf (retirement to mosque for a stipulated time).

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim had approved the presidential election schedule, fixing August 6 as the date of polling.

According to the schedule, the nomination papers for the presidential election will be submitted on July 24 while the scrutiny process will take place on July 26.

The nomination papers can be withdrawn on July 29 and the final list of candidates will also be issued on the same date. The election will be held on August 6 while results will be announced on August 7.
