ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court declared the illegal promotion of eighty bureaucrats as null and void and ordered to set up the board again to promote officers on merit, Geo News reported Thursday.
A three-judge bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry was hearing the civil servant promotion case.
The petition was filed by noted columnist Orya Maqbool Jan who had challenged the promotion of grade 20-21 officers. The promotions were made in the tenure of former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and were approved by Secretary Establishment Taimur Azmat Usman.
After hearing the case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry declared the promotions as invalid and ordered to promote officers on merit and according to the set regulations. The court further ordered to form a board for the same purpose that will implement the court’s order.
The bench had reserved its verdict on July 12.
