KARACHI: The city police, after arrest of the key members of water mafia for selling stolen water from hydrants at exorbitant price, Tuesday overnight released them on the intervention of an ex-Inspector General of police, Geo News reported.
Police sources said that a special operation had started on the directives of Provincial Local Bodies Minister, Ovais Muzaffar a few days ago against the water mafia selling stolen water at hydrants and several illegal hydrants operating at Charka Goth in Korangi were demolished, while their water connection severed during the process.
Water Board officials instead of getting the case registered against the accused according to law remained apathetic and meanwhile the accused in collusion with the police managed to get a very weak/defective FIR registered of which Karachi CCPO, Shahid Hayat had taken a serious notice.
Later the police nominating the owners of the hydrants also in the case had arrested Hazoor Bukhsh Kalhor and the contractor Shakil Mehar, but they were not presented in the court on Tuesday.
On inquiry, it has been revealed that one former IG repeatedly kept telephoning the concerned police officers to which they finally succumbed and released the accused on bail from the police station on Monday night instead of presenting them in the court on Tuesday.
