KARACHI : Unremitting gun attacks across the city claimed the lives of eight more people – including a headmaster, two activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and a lawyer.

Fifty-five-year-old Pervaiz Alvi was gunned down and his son wounded in the Metroville locality of SITE Town, said Superintendent of Police Fida Hussain.

Pervaiz Alvi, who was the headmaster of the Islamia Public School in Block D of Metroville, was sitting in his office at the school along with his son Zahid Alvi when an armed assailant barged in the room and opened fire on the two men.

The headmaster died on the spot, while his son also suffered bullet injuries in the gun attack.

SITE-A Station House Officer Rana Khushi Muhammad managed to arrive on the scene before the assailant could escape.

An exchange of fire ensued during which the attacker, who was identified as 22-year-old Muhammad Umer Manzoor, was shot dead.

Police suspect Manzoor had a personal motive behind the attack.

On the other hand, the law enforcers are also investigating the claims that the attacker was an extortionist who sought money from Pervaiz Alvi and when the headmaster informed the police, the attacker opened fire on the father and son.

Fida Hussain said Manzoor was trying to escape on a motorcycle after attacking the headmaster and his son when a police party arrived on the scene and asked him to surrender.

Instead of complying, the attacker opened fire on the law enforcers, who retaliated and shot him dead.

Twenty-six-year-old Noman Shah and his lawyer Chaudhry Hammad Idrees Advocate were gunned down near the Faizan Marriage Lawn situated at Islam Chowk in Orangi Town, said Superintendent of Police Sajid Saddozai.

MQM activist Shah and his lawyer Idrees were on their way in a Cultus bearing registration No AHR-428 when unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire at the vehicle, killing both the men.

Lawyers across the city boycotted court proceedings in protest over the killing of Advocate Idrees.

They demanded the authorities to provide protection to the legal fraternity and arrest the culprits involved in the murder.

A medical store owner was gunned down and his friend wounded near the Metro Cinema in Orangi Town, said Station House Officer Tanveer Murad.

Fifty-year-old Faheem alias Faheema was sitting with his friend Shakeel in Sector 6 of the town when unidentified assailants opened fire on them.

Faheem was killed in the gun attack, while Shakeel also suffered bullet injuries.

A newspaper hawker was gunned down near the Gulshan-e-Farooq mosque in Sector 7D-3 of New Karachi, said Sir Syed Deputy Superintendent of Police Altaf Hussain.

Another MQM activist was gunned down in the Qasba Colony locality on Saturday night, adds our correspondent Salis bin Perwaiz.

The law enforcement agencies have failed to improve the deteriorating law and order situation of the city, where a constant sense of gloom prevails.
