ISLAMABAD: The government now has more time to make the appointment on the important position of Chief Election Commissioner, as the Supreme Court of Pakistan has allowed it to fill the slot till October 28.
The apex court also ordered the provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab to present bills for local government ordinances in their respective assemblies within two days.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Nasirul Mulk headed a three-judge bench to hear the case in connection with the local bodies’ elections.
During the proceedings, the Advocate General Sindh told the court that the Governor returned with an objection the amended bill for the local government elections.
On this, the court directed the Sindh government to present the LG bill for legislation in its assembly within two days and in case of failure the court would issue a notice to the Chief Minister.
The court also ordered the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to convene a meeting in two days for working out a final schedule for the LG polls.
The Punjab government was also given two days to table its LG bill before the assembly.
The court expressed extreme displeasure over non-appointment of CEC and ordered the government to fill the position by October 28.
