Karachi: Police arrest 120 for creating chaos, resorting to violence amid protests

KARACHI: Police on Wednesday arrested 120 people, belonging to a religious organisation, for staging a protest, creating chaos in the city, and resorting to violence.

According to a police spokesperson, 30 people were taken into custody from the city's South Zone, 60 from the East Zone, while 47 demonstrators were arrested from Karachi's West Zone.

LAHORE: The ongoing protest at Lahore's GT Road has come to an end and the crowd of demonstrators have dispersed, Lahore Motorway Police confirmed.

Traffic also resumed on the road connecting Lahore'sThoker Niaz Baig Tehsil to Rahim Yar Khan, the Motorway Police added.

Inspector-General Punjab Inaam Ghani also visited Jinnah Hospital Lahore to review the situation and met with police officers and personnel who had been injured during the protests, a Lahore Police spokesperson said.

IG Punjab also provided monetary aid to the injured police personnel and instructed the hospital to ensure top-quality treatment.

Karachi: Over 60 protesters remanded in police custody till April 19

KARACHI: More than 60 protesters arrested from different areas of the metropolis were presented before a court on Wednesday.

The court handed over the accused to the police on physical remand till April 19.

The suspects were arrested from New Town, Orangi Town, Bilal Colony, and others areas of the city, said police.

The suspects have been charged with disturbing law and order situations and terrorism during the riots taking place in the city.

All roads in Islamabad clear for traffic: DC

Narowal: Train schedules disturbed because of protests

Railway stations have been closed in Narowal due to the ongoing protests by a religious party across the country.

The station master said that no train has been able to reach Sialkot for the last two days.

The Allama Iqbal train from Karachi to Sialkot returned to Lahore from Narowal due to disrupted train schedules.

Lathani Express also returned to Lahore from Narowal due to gate closure, the station master added.

He said both trains bound for Sialkot were diverted from Narowal today.

20 protesters arrested in Sargodha

Death toll from stone pelting rises to three in Lahore, Faisalabad

In Lahore and Faisalabad, the death toll from stone pelting and violence by protesters of a religious party has risen to three, with two constables and a passerby among the deceased.

Protesters tore the uniforms of several law enforcers and atleast 97 people sustained injuries in the violence.

The Lahore CCPO said the injured personnel included DSPs and SHOs. A police mobile was also set on fire, he said.

Cases of protest and vandalism have been registered in Faisalabad and Gujranwala and 92 suspects have been arrested.

Earlier, protesters pelted stones at vehicles on Sharae Faisal near Stargate and set several vehicles on fire.

According to the Sindh police, several officers, including SSP Irfan Bahadur, were injured during this.

In Korangi, five officials, including SHO Saudabad, were injured due to stone pelting by angry protesters.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said on Tuesday that dictation from any party or group was indigestible.

Briefing media persons after the federal cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the minister said a party or a group can present their demands in a democratic way upon which negotiations can be held.

Replying to a question regarding the demands presented by the religious party, Fawad Hussain said decision-making could not be left to any party or group. When his attention was drawn to violence and agitation in various parts of Pakistan, the minister emphasised that things would be fine soon.

“No group or party must even think of dictating to a government or state and if the state allows this, then it will disintegrate and there will be chaos,” he said.

Any student group, lawyers’ body or religious scholars group, he said, could present their demands and there could be talks thereon in a democratic manner, but no dictation at all.

Martyred cop’s funeral prayers offered in Lahore

LAHORE: The funeral prayers of martyred Constable Muhammad Afzal, who was tortured last day by violent protestors at Shahdara Chowk area, were offered on Tuesday at District Police Lines Qilla Gujjar Singh.

CCPO Lahore Additional IG Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, DIG Operations Lahore Sajid Kiani, DIG Investigation Shariq Jamal, SSP Administration, SP Legal and senior Police officers and Jawans of the force attended the funeral.

The son and family members of Shaheed Constable M Afzal also attended the funeral ceremony.

Special prayers were also offered for the departed soul of Constable Afzal at this occasion whereas a contingent of Police presented guard of honour to the martyred constable as well.

CCPO Lahore met with the son and other family members of Shaheed Constable and assured them complete cooperation from Lahore Police in every respect.

Rangers called out in Punjab to maintain law and order

Gujranwala: Heroic doctor braves fury of protesters, manages to get oxygen to hospital

A medical superintendent, belonging to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Gujranwala has shown immense bravery and dedication to his duty amid an increasingly worsening protest situation.

According to Medical Superintendent Fazl-ur-Rehman, his vehicle, carrying oxygen cylinders from Lahore, reached Gujranwala when it was stopped by protesters at the Chanda Qila Bypass.

Fazl-ur-Rehman said that he was beaten up by a few protesters but he continued to plead with them to let him get the cylinders to the hospital and was able to have his vehicle spared from an onslaught.

Gujranwala: Police register case against 355, arrest 19

On Gujranwala's Chanda Qila Bypass, a case has been registered at a police station after protesters wreaked havoc and caused much damage to the town infrastructure.

According to police a case has been registered against 355 people under sections pertaining to arson, kidnapping and terrorism.

Of those nominated in the case, 19 have been arrested, police said.

Lahore: One more policeman dies; 97 officers wounded as protests spread

As protests spread all over Lahore, another policeman has died and the number of wounded have risen to 97.

According to a police spokesperson, the constable died after being beaten up by an enraged mob.

Constable Ali Imran was initially rushed to Mayo Hospital in an injured state where he succumbed to his wounds.

He became the second police officer to have died in today's protests.

The spokesperson said that so far, in all the clashes with protesters, 97 police personnel have been injured.

The demonstrators pelted stones at the police.

Lahore policeman dies as violence erupts in sit-in by religious party

A policeman has died and 74 people have been left wounded as violence erupted during sit-ins in Lahore by a religious party.

The demonstrators were reported by police to have pelted stones at law enforcement personnel, besides getting into physical altercations with them.

Among those wounded are a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Station House Officers (SHOs), the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) said.

He said that the constable to have died, whom he identified as Afzal, fell victim to stone pelting in Shahdra.

The CCPO said that the protesters are being rounded up and arrests being made.



Roads closed in several parts of Lahore due to sit-ins

In Lahore, Ferozepur road, Chongi Amar Sadhu, Bhatta Chowk, Shah Kaam Chowk and Raiwind Road were all blocked for traffic.

Khayaban Chowk, Yateem Khana, Scheme Mor, Iqbal Town, Shah Pur Kanjran and Multan Road were also blocked.

Moreover, Darogha Wala Chowk, Shahdara Mor, Begum Kot, EMC Society and Canal Road were completely closed to all kinds of traffic.

Additionally, Burki Gol Chakkar, New Shad Bagh, Krol Ghati, Ring Road, Samanabad Mor, Ameen Chowk, Ghazi Chowk, Mohlnawal, Kacha Jail Road were also closed to vehicular traffic.
