'White flag' tribute paid to doctors fighting coronavirus in Pakistan

KARACHI/LAHORE/ISLAMABAD/QUETTA/PESHAWAR: All around Pakistan, people have come out to balconies, rooftops, parks, and other public places, waving white flags to honour the doctors, nurses, and paramedics — the nation's heroes — battling the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Singing and swaying to the tune of musician Jawad Ahmed's "Humay Tumsay Pyar Hai [We Love You]" at 6pm, people raised their flags to pay tribute to the medics who are working tirelessly throughout day and night to fight the pandemic, which has so far killed nine people in Pakistan and infected almost 1,300.

Doctors and other paramedic staff have been at the forefront of the fight against the virus, which has, as of reporting time, infected over552,000 people and left 25,000 others dead in 199 countries and territories since an outbreak in Wuhan, China, back in December 2019.

At Geo News' headquarters in Karachi, employees in the newsroom also paid tribute to medical and health professionals battling the coronavirus pandemic, waving white flags and singing: "You're a messiah to the nation, a healer for the country, we love you!"

Former cricketer and'King of Swing', Wasim Akram, waved a white flag from his rooftop to pay tribute to the medical staff.

Despite rain in Rawalpindi andIslamabad, people — children and the elderly alike — took to their balconies and rooftops to honour the medics

In Badin, young thalassemia patients waved flags, while women and childrencame out dressed in white and waving white flags inGhotki's Ubauro city.

In Rajanpur, rescue officials were part of a rally to the district headquarters (DHQ) hospital to honour the doctors and other medical professionals with white flags.
