KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday evening imposed a three-day ban on pillion-riding in Karachi, hours after a policeman escorting a polio vaccination team was gunned down.

According to the Sindh Home Department, the ban will be effective from Tuesday midnight (January 20) and will stay in place until Thursday, Jan 22.

The ban is being imposed for the security of the ongoing polio vaccination drive in the city, said a statement from the provincial home department.

Earlier on Monday, a policeman deployed as part of security for an anti-polio team was shot dead in the Orangi Town area.

Following the incident, officials had called for a ban on pillion riding in the city in order for the anti-polio campaign to continue.

Violence has returned to the metropolis with at least seven people including two policemen killed overnight.
