LAHORE: At least 23 people died after fire broke out in shoe factory here on Tuesday, Geo News reported.

The fire engulfed the factory while full shift of 45 was at work in the shoe sole making factory located near Gulshan-e-Ravi area.

Around ten fire tenders took an hour to extinguish the fire.

As to what caused the blaze to start is yet to be known, but large quantities of chemicals were present in the shoe factory located on Band Road caught fire.

MS Mayo Hospital confirmed the deaths of 21 workers most of them owing to third degree burns and the rest from inhaling poisonous fumes.

The injured were being treated.

Earlier talking to Geo News, the commissioner Lahore had said six workers died while nineteen others sustained injuries but later the death toll jumped.
