ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has appointed senior lawyer Qazi Jameel as new prosecutor in Malik Riaz contempt case, Geo News reported.

Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Ejaz Chaudhary heard the case here Tuesday.

The court was informed that Malik Riaz could not appear before the court due to illness.

In the previous hearing, the court had ousted Attorney General Irfan Qadir as prosecutor in the case, and had sought a list of senior lawyers from Registrar Office to appoint a new one. Today, the court appointed former AGP and president SCBA Qazi Jameel as prosecutor in the case.

In his remarks, Justice Ejaz Afzal said the court is optimistic that the new prosecutor would proceed the case.

Meanwhile, the court dismissed a petition against placing the name of Malik Riaz on ECL.

Later, the hearing was adjourned for indefinite period.
