The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Wednesdaysaid gas would be supplied to domestic consumers forIftar and Sehrduring the holy month ofRamadan, butfor limited hours — drawing fire from consumers who are complaining of not getting enough of this essential fuel during mealtimes.

The utility said that the gas pressure would be low from 8am to 2:30pm as it was facing a shortfall of 250 million mmBtu.

According to the SSGC helpline, for Iftar, gas will be supplied to consumers in Karachi from 2:30pm to 07:00pm, while for Sehr it will be available from 2:30am to 05:00am.

The gas utility added that consumers would face complete suspension or low pressure during the rest of the hours.

“Shutting down gas supply in the holy month of Ramadan is insanity. This is summer not winter. The government is making our lives miserable,” Syed Masroor, a resident of Korangi, said.

“They are increasing the tariff on a daily basis, but are not supplying gas when it is needed the most. What is this?” he added.

According to sources, gas supply to areas including North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Nagin Chowrangi, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and others has been suspended since 8am.

Disgruntled consumers complained that the gas supply outage had made it impossible for them to cook meals for patients, the elderly, and children who were unable to fast.
