Sherry Rehman says climate catastrophe 'nothing to do with lack of planning'

2022-08-29 13:45:45

Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman has said that Pakistan's climate catastrophe has “nothing to do with planning.”

The statement came during Rehman’s conversation with DW, when she responded to a question about allegations that the current situation in Pakistan has more to do with poor planning and corruption, instead of man-made climate change.

She contended that urban planning and infrastructure have been in place for years since Pakistan decided to focus on building flood-resilient infrastructure after the super floods of 2010.

“We are in the middle of a storm and I don’t think anyone could have planned for eight weeks of unrelenting monsoon rains with 72 districts taking 700% more water than ever. I don’t think that’s about planning,” she said.

She went on to say that Pakistan surely needs better planning but the water and glacial melts can not be prevented because it is caused by global warming.

Rehman said that there should be a concrete example but for that Pakistan needs a huge amount of funds to build climate-resilient infrastructure.

“Planning for climate resilient infrastructure for an economically stressed country is not possible without external help,” she added.
