Karachi fire: Ghauri calls for Rs2.5mn compensation for each family

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Babar Ghauri Monday demanded of the government to compensate the affectees of timber market blaze by releasing Rs2.5 million for each family on an immediate basis.

He said the affectees had been left to starve, as all their investment and belongings had reduced to ashes.

The fire had erupted in a wood storage house late Friday night and soon engulfed the surrounding shops and residential buildings. The fire fighters were called out from across the city which overcame the blaze after a firefighting effort that lasted for many hours till morning.

Huge losses were caused, as the fire not only gutted the shops but burned to ashes the belongings of people in the residential buildings.

The fire also inflicted severe damage to the buildings, raising concerns of the residents if the buildings structures were still solid and inhabitable.
