KARACHI: At least eleven suspects were detained in the wee hours of Saturday when Rangers carried out a search operation in various areas of the metropolis.

Rangers personnel started the door-to-door search operation in different areas of Karachi. The operation was conducted on intelligence about the presence of suspected criminals in the neighbourhood.

According to a statement released by Rangers, five suspects were arrested from the areas of Defence, Korangi and Shahra-e-Faisal.

The suspects were a five-member gang, involved in bank robberies and street crimes. Rangers also recovered a 9mm pistol from the suspects, which was used in the killing of a police officer.

In other raids, rangers arrested six further suspects, who were reported to have been target-killers, extortionists and street criminals.

Law enforcers have intensified their crackdown against suspected criminals, target-killers and terrorists in the city.

The operation against criminal elements in Pakistan’s commercial hub Karachi was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police.

Since then Rangers have extended their powers every few months when they expire.
