Qatari prince willing to record statement with JIT from Doha: sources

ISLAMABAD: The Panama case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has received a second letter from Qatari Prince Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani.
Sources said on Wednesday that the detailed letter informs the JIT that the royal family member has no qualms if investigators visit him in Doha to record his statement.
Earlier, the JIT had written twice to the prince to record his statement regarding the prime minister’s family’s business dealings abroad.
The Sharif family had earlier submitted a letter by the Qatari prince in the Supreme Court aiding the premier’s defence of his money trail during the Panama case hearing.
Sources in the premier’s inner circle confirmed the contents and delivery of the letter on Wednesday, saying the Qatari prince’s statement will help their case profoundly.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) submitted a petition in the Supreme Court stating that federal ministers and other individuals at the behest of the prime minister are pressuring the JIT.
Also on Wednesday, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the JIT has begun clashing with all state institutions. He added that the JIT will have to identify the individual who leaked Hussain Nawaz’s picture.
Commenting on the issue, senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Senator Aitizaz Ahsan said the prime minister is stuck in a room, and will have to break the walls to get out.
He claimed the premier has made three plans to save himself: tampering record of his money trail, buy the JIT members to secure a favourable verdict or achieve a positive outcome by making the Supreme Court implementation bench controversial.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, senior Pakistan Muslime League-Nawaz leader and federal minister Khawaja Asif tweeted why only one family was facing scrutiny in the country.
He was responding to reports that Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been summoned by the JIT on June 17. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is already scheduled to appear before the JIT on Thursday (tomorrow).
