SHIKARPUR: Authorities managed to foil an underage marriage Thursday night here in the Naparkot area where a 40-year-old man was set to wed a 10-year-old girl.

The husband — identified as Mohammad Somar — was arrested after his nikkah to the minor was completed, police said, adding that they took the "crying girl" into custody. The child bride was about to be sent away with the groom.

Police said they conducted the operation in a timely manner just as the traditional festivities in Mehrumari village were about to come to an end.

Police further added that Mohammad Somar confessed to paying the girl's father Rs250,000 for the wedding.

The marriage officiator and the minor girl's father were declared to be absconding, police said. Once they are arrested, however, the truth can be ascertained.

Farooq Amjad, the assistant sub-inspector of police (ASP) for Shikarpur, confirmed that they have the girl in their custody and the investigation was ongoing.
