Power supply restored in Karachi after major breakdown

KARACHI: The power supply to most parts of the city was restored after three hours following a rare electricity breakdown.

The port city plunged into darkness a little after midnight on Thursday owing to multiple grid stations of the K-Electric (previously KESC) going offline.

The widespread outage affected Saddar, Clifton, Garden, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Burns Road, Jamshed Town, Jacob Lines, New Town, Nazimabad block 8, 9 and 10, Soldier Bazar, as well as the Governor House and the Chief Minister House.

According to a tweet from the power generation company's twitter account, 11 out of 62 grid stations tripped causing the power breakdown.

Current outage is due to tripping. 11 out of 62 grids are down, will continue updating our consumers as we hear back from the area teams.

Sources said, the breakdown was caused due to a fault at the Bin Qasim power station.

Update

02:00 - About two hours after the power breakdown K-Electric officials confirmed the fault with the Extra-High Tension 220Kv line and estimated it would take an hour and thirty minutes to restore power to the metropolis.

02:30- Speaking to Geo News, K-Electric spokesman Usama Qureshi confirmed that power restoration begun to parts of the city and supply will be restored to the remaining areas by 3AM.
