SC seeks LG polls schedule from ECP tonight
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has sought the schedule for the Local Government (LG) elections in cantonment board areas, Islamabad, Sindh, Punjab and KP by 7:45 PM tonight (Wednesday) from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Supreme Court will convene again at 8:00 PM if the schedules are not received.

Earlier, the apex court directed the ECP to issue a schedule for holding LG elections in cantonment board areas.

Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja during the hearing of the case today, remarked that the chief executive should come to court in person and explain the reasons as to why the holding of LG polls in Cantonment Board areas is not being taken seriously.

He went on to say that the court is tired of giving dates upon dates for fixing the schedule and it is time to stop ridiculing the constitution.

He further said that a contempt notice has been issued to a Prime Minister in the past and he was forced to leave office while another took his place.

The Attorney General (AG) argued that it was the EC’s responsibility and not the government’s, to hold polls. He added that, the court should give 48 hours time as an ordinance was being finalised.

The court responded that the AG is not representing the government so he cannot give such an answer.
