First case lodged in Punjab under new women protection law

LAHORE: Police in Lahore's Green Town area say they have arrested a man for allegedly beating her wife in the first-ever case registered under a new law that provides protections to women against domestic abuse.

The Protection of Women Against Violence Bill 2015, signed into law on Monday, declares physical violence, abusive language, stalking, cyber crimes, etc, against women a crime in the province.

The complainant Yusra Bibi had lodged a complaint with local police against her husband Tayyab, a drug addict, who allegedly used to torture her over demanding money to run the affairs of home.

Police have arrested the accused after registering a case and launched investigation.
