MQM, Karachi Ittehad face off at polling station

KARACHI: Tension flared up at District West polling station following announcement of unofficial results for chairman and vice chairman.

MQM and Karachi Ittehad faced off when MQM’s nominee Izharuddin Ahmed was unofficially announced as chairman against Karachi Ittehad’s candidate for the position.

Karachi Ittehad’s nominee Azizullah Afridi meanwhile was unofficially declared vice chairman opposite MQM’s candidate Gul Faraz Khattak.

Workers from both the parties began protesting and chanting slogans when the unofficial results came out.

MQM’s Izharuddin Ahmed reportedly received 36 votes. Karachi Ittehad’s Azizullah Afridi got 44 votes.

Karachi Ittehad refused to accept the results for the district and carried out a sit-in outside DC office. Party’s candidate Asif Khan, who lost to Izharuddin, claimed that 20 votes had been tampered. A total of 67 votes were registered at the polling venue.

According to reports, workers from the parties also blocked roads in the area and started brawling with the opponents.

Karachi Ittehad is made up of PPP, PML(N), PTI, ANP, Jamat-e-Islami and JUI.
