Serving member of British armed forces arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences

Metropolitan Police arrested a 30-year-old man from Somerset on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of terrorism offences.

The arrest was part of an intelligence-leg operation connected to an ongoing investigation in which officers from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command (SO15), officers from Avon, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall police department took part. 

The British armed forces member taken in custody has not been named; he is suspected of being involved in the preparation for acts of terrorism under section 5 of the Terrorism Act. The detained individual was taken from a residential address and has been shifted to a West Country police station. 

According to information released by the Metropolitan Police, the threat to England, Wales and Scotland from Northern Ireland-related terrorism is substantial while the threat to Northern Ireland is severe.
