KARACHI: The garbage dumps strewn across the metropolis seem equally disturbing to children as well.

In a video message, a little girl has requested Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to visit her neighbourhood and see its dismal condition.

"My name is Maryam Batool and I live in Rizvia Society," the girl in her school uniform says while introducing herself.

She points to the smoldering heap of trash in the background, and says she feels suffocated due to the smoke rising from the burning garbage.

It is visible from the video that due to the smoke she feels difficulty speaking and also clutches her scarf.

"Please CM uncle come in my area and solve my problem as soon as possible. I will be thankful to you," Maryam says at the end of the video.

She ends her video message on a 'coughing note' to emphasise her point.

Karachi, the country's largest metropolis, produces over 12,000 tonnes of garbage every day. Of this, only 4,000 tonnes end up at landfill sites while the rest is burnt at empty plots, grounds, parks, and roadsides.

Shortly after assuming the office, CM Murad Ali Shah expressed his displeasure over the dire state of cleanliness in the city. He also gave deadlines to the local administration for cleaning up of the city, but – so far – to no avail.
