Why did iPhone 7 lose the headphone jack?

The inside of an iPhone is a valuable real estate and the headphone jack requires a considerable space to accommodate the plug.

The iPhones today are crammed full of components, with as little wasted space as possible. It means that a component like the headphone box inside has to be in the bezel areas above or below the screen. That includes antennas, cameras, ports, speakers, sensors, microphones, and the Home button and Touch ID hardware.

The headphone jack in the iPhone 6S nearly occupies up about 10 pct of the bezel space in the entire phone.

Waterproofing has been another reason for the removal of the jack as it takes a lot of space, while ports are especially difficult to waterproof.

So the headphone jack takes up lots of precious bezel space, is especially difficult to waterproof, and is in the way of the necessary expansion of the iPhone 7's Taptic Engine.
