Tortured cadet college student will be sent to US for treatment

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday approved the treatment of alleged torture victim Ahmed in the US on government funds.

The father of the Larkana Cadet College student will accompany him to the US.

“Shah has ordered taking Ahmed to the US for treatment and instructions have been issued to health department Sindh to finalise the arrangements for the treatment,” the official announcement said.

CM Sindh directed the health department to make travel arrangements, including visa and passport for the two. The finance ministry will make necessary arrangements for finances of the treatment.

According to medical experts, Ahmed’s treatment is possible in the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Ohio. He will take three to six months to recover, they added.

Secretary Health Dr Usman Chachar said Ahmed and his father would fly to US on a regular flight and not by Air ambulance.

“We are trying our best to help Ahmed,” the secretary added.

Muhammad Ahmed, student of Cadet College Larkana, was rendered mute and paralysed due to alleged torture by a teacher. He was brought last week to the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical College (JPMC) for medical examination by a medical board.

The medical board said that Ahmed’s throat had been broken at several places. It advised that Ahmed be taken abroad for treatment.

The board added that Ahmed's physiotherapy at a private hospital should continue until arrangements for his travel are made.
