Justice Saqib Nisar appointed as next Chief Justice of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification on Wednesday announcing the appointment of Justice Mian Saqib Nisar as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. 

According to the notification, Justice Saqib Nisar "the most senior judge of the supreme court will serve as the Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 31 December 2016. 

Earlier this year, when incumbent Chief Justice Anwer Zaheer Jamali went for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, Justice Saqib Nisar had served as the Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was born on the 18th of January 1954 in Lahore where he attended the Cathedral High School and graduated from the Governor College Lahore before obtaining a Bachelor of Law from the University of Punjab in 1979-80.

Justice Nisar started his legal profession as an Advocate in 1980 and was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court in 1982 and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1994. 

In 1998 he was elevated as the Judge of the High Court and of the Supreme Court in 2010. 

Previously Justice Nisar has served as Secretary general of the Lahore High Court Bar Association and was appointed as the Federal Law Secretary in 1997.
