SSP Zahid Mehmood Gondal, who was martyred in Monday's blast in Lahore, hailed from district Mandi Bahauddin. He has left behind his wife and two young children.

Gondal, among at least 13 others, embraced martyrdom when a suicide bomber hit close to the Punjab Assembly in Lahore where hundreds of demonstrators had gathered for a protest.

The powerful explosion also left dozens injured, with reports of more than 60 wounded being treated at different hospitals in the city.

He had previously served as DPO Rajanpur, a riverine area in Punjab that borders Sindh and Balochistan, which often made headlines due to the presence of notorious bandits until last year when it was cleared in a joint offensive by the Army, Rangers and Punjab Police.

Muhammad Khan Gondal (late), father of the martyred official, was joint director of Agricultural Development Bank.

One of his two brothers, Shehzad Gondal, is presently serving as DC Income Tax Lahore, whose wife is sister of DPO Sheikhupura Sarfraz Ahmed Virk.

The mother of SSP Zahid Gondal is still alive, while his sister is married in Ajjowal, Mandi Bahauddin.
