KARACHI: In a country where women are still hoping to find their voice, another heart-wrenching case surfaced when a 12-hour-old bruised baby girl was left for dead in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The incident came into public’s attention after it was shared on social media by Minhas Ahmed. He wrote on a Facebook group early Saturday morning that he was sitting with his friends in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 5 when the group heard a strange noise and barking of dogs.

They went to investigate and found an unclothed battered and bruised baby girl lying on the ground. “I don’t have words to explain the situation. Someone threw away barely a day old baby girl and she was crying and literally mumbling,” he wrote in the post.

The group then called Chhipa Welfare Association, who then took the infant to a hospital.

Later, the Chhipa took the newborn to National Institute of Child Health.

“At 3am, I got a call from my junior that Chippa personnel have brought an unattended baby. Our hospital has the policy of admitting such patients on a priority basis. So we got the patient admitted,” NICH senior postgraduate resident medical officer Ibrahim Bukhari told Geo.tv.

The newborn was given first aid in the casualty room and then shifted to neonatal intensive care unit, he said, adding the baby was dropping blood pressure so doctors started dopamine support.

“[Her] wounds were cleaned and tetanus injections plus antibiotics were given. [The] baby had severe bruises and bite marks all over her body. Her bones were fractured at several places.”

The baby eventually died around 12pm on Saturday. “It’s a miracle she fought the battle till 12pm,” said Bukhari, adding “We tried our best.”

A medico-legal case was also registered at Saddar police station, added the doctor.

On the identity of the child, he said “We don’t have any DNA database in the country so parents cannot be traced. The baby was handed over to Chippa who then buried her.”

The doctor also shared his thoughts on the incident in a Facebook post.
